Overview

Research identified a major gap in Ghana’s emergency services (secondary data)—a lack of a unified platform connecting citizens with authorities. To solve this, a user-friendly app was developed, focusing on inclusive design to enable seamless communication with emergency personnel for all mobile users, ensuring equal access to help in emergencies.

The designs shows how a user easily navigates the app to alert services such as Police, Fire service and Medical service (ambulance)

Problems the App is solving

  • The gap in contacting the emergency response services

  • Making these services accessible even to non smart devices

Goal

Assists users in reaching emergency services for prompt and swift assistance

High fidelity designs

A user selects one of the services and is told to select between call or text to talk to an agent. This is then processed as you can also go live to record and share the incident. Your location is also automatically taken and sent to the requirement call center agent who contacts the fire or police service as required

USSD feature

This feature was specifically designed for remote areas and non-smartphone users, as research revealed a substantial number of people rely on such devices. Therefore, simple prompts were created to facilitate easy contact with emergency services

Expected results

  • A faster way to reach emergency services, expected to reduce response times by at least 15% in the next quarter, resulting in fewer lives lost and less property damage.

  • Remote settlers and non-smartphone users are expected to account for about 20% usage of this feature, due to its low learning curve and simple prompts for activation.

Takeaways

  • There is a significant gap in emergency services and their response times, especially in remote locations or areas lacking proper address descriptions. Consequently, there is a strong need for an improved mapping system within the country.

  • Understanding the necessity of thorough research allowed us to implement the USSD feature effectively. Without a substantial amount of data, we could have easily excluded a large proportion of potential users.
